Occurrence and role of betaine in living organisms
Summary.

This article presents a review concerning the important role of betaine in the world of microorganisms, plants, animals, and important to the human body. The most important function of betaine is considered its ability to osmoprotection, which protects cells from osmotic pressure changes, as well as a donor of methyl groups and participates in many biochemical changes particularly important for the human body. The paper presents methods for the production of betaine, the most important directions of research and discusses the possibility of practical application of this compound.
