The paper presents the results of research of three selected profiles of arable soils of the Unisław Basin considering the chemical and biological properties. The area is under agricultural use where field production of vegetables, wheat and rape is located. A high content of CaCO3, reaching 70.1% in profile no 2, which made the reaction of the soils analysed alkaline or neutral, was reported. In the gyttjas investigated a narrow ratio of C:N was recorded. The content of available phosphorus in the soils according to the criteria provided for in PN-R-04023 (1996) was low. Activity of dehydrogenases, alkaline and acid phosphatase was highest in soil profile no 3 where rape was grown. The activity of alkaline phosphatase was 27% higher than the activity of acid phosphomonoesterase.
