In geographical sciences numerical ratios, describing, among others, shapes of spatial entities, are used to characterise geocomplexes and for land use planning. These ratios are also used in farming, when the shape of the plot, the configuration of farming land or the shape of the village are analysed. This paper attempts to apply the above ratios in formulation of numerical characteristics of typical shapes of villages which originated till the end of the 18th century. It also attempts to determine the usefulness of the tested ratios for analysis of shapes of typical villages. The shape ratios selected for examination took into account various geometric elements of village borders. The computed ratios made it possible to express, in a numerical form, to what extent a village shape approximates a given pattern. Results confirm that the applied method of numerical analysis of village shape can be used with some limitations. Out of all analysed village shape ratios the Kostrubiec and Mielewczyk indicators are the most appropriate.
