This paper discusses the issue of occupational diseases in Polish forestry, which has turned out to be a serious problem recently. Work in forestry is particularly dangerous and severe, performed under constant threat of various environment factors. The main threat of the environment of work in forestry leading to illnesses is a result of noise-exposure creating double-sided permanent hearing loss; vibration, leading to vibration syndrome and biological threats, the consequences are getting Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The State Forests National Forest Holding employs nearly 2,500 people who work under heavy threat posed by the working conditions and the nature itself. In the period 2004-2009 a total of more than 1,600 cases of occupational diseases were legally adjudicated. Upward trend of the number of registered occupational diseases in forestry has remained for over two decades due to the growing threat of tick borne diseases. The SFNFH is pursuing a number of activities in the field of prevention of occupational diseases. Among them important ones are: tests for Lyme disease (during the period 2004-2009 nearly 54 thousand tests were carried out), TBE vaccination (over 22 thousands workers), decisions for sanatorium treatment (about 100 in the test period). The paper gives figures of estimated direct costs of occupational diseases in forestry.
