The paper presents results of domestic wastewater treatment in septic tanks on the basis of literature review and our research. An overall analysis of septic tank functioning was performed, together with the division into different types of users served by these tanks. The text discusses the impact of the number of chambers, use of effluent filters, also seasons of the year and days of the week on the quality of septic tank effluent. The analysed indicators of the quality of wastewater were: the biochemical and chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids. The paper presents results of several years study of a septic tank served 5 persons. 188 measurements of BOD5 were made, 150 measurements of COD and 196 measurements of TSS in septic tank effluent. The septic tank showed a good performance, especially during colder seasons.
