The aim of the study was to test/evaluate the effect of site moisture and nutrient availability on wetland plant diversity. Possibilities of using such indices as: N:P and N:K ratios to assess habitat conditions influencing biodiversity were tested. Phytosociological and habitat studies were carried out in different types of wetlands (littoral zone, mid-forest wetlands) in years 2008 and 2009. The analysed sites were characterised by different moisture, pH and nutrient availability. The obtained results showed a significant influence of moisture conditions, pH and N:P ratio on the biodiversity of the analysed sites. Soil N:P and N:K ratios exhibited lower variability between sites than concentrations of individual nutrients, and better reflected the trophic status and nutrient availability for plants. These results indicate possibilities to apply the N:P ratio to describe habitat conditions. The direction of floristic changes in the studied sites depended mostly on moisture conditions and soil pH. These factors exerted a significant influence on trophic conditions and affected species composition and biodiversity. In drier sites, a transformation into the psammophyte community of Calamagrostietum epigeji was observed.
