The article presents the results of the model research carried out in the laboratory of Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Land Surveying, University of Agriculture in Kraków. The model consisted of five identical PVC columns with a diameter of 200 mm and a height of 1100 mm. The same amount of primarily treated sewage, identical in terms of temperature and physico-chemical pollutants, flew into each of the columns. Each column was filled with material (sand and small gravel) of different grain size – from 0.28 mm to 6.0 mm. The research period was 323 days. Basic sewage pollution index (BOD5) was analysed in 72 series. Each series comprised of primarily treated sewage and sewage treated in each model columns (a total of 432 BOD5 analyses). The approximate work-in periods for the filter bed of each d10 diameters were evaluated based on the described analyses. Direct data observation and control charts methods were applied in order to define the length of the work-in period. The shortest work-in period was observed for the d10 = 0.25 mm diameter, whereas the longest period was observed for the highest analysed diameter – d10 = 4.28 mm.
