In Poland, stand species compositions are in 43% consistent, in 38% – partially consistent and in 19% - inconsistent with the silvicultural stand type and, therefore, forest reconstruction is a significant and important task for foresters. The study presents the problem of stand reconstruction from the point of view of forest management (regulation, stand stability, concept of reconstruction planning) and explains how the concept of stand and forest reconstruction is understood in Poland. Recommended examples of solutions in the field of stand reconstruction were indicated. Criteria of stand assignment for reconstruction, as well as methods of its realisation were discussed from the point of view of successive instructions of forest management and in the light of concepts from different research centres (Poznań, Cracow and Warsaw). The forest reconstruction system and the way of regulation of the final cutting applied within its framework were discussed. Differences in the approach to reconstruction from the point of view of the forest management instruction (2003) and principles of forest silviculture (2003) were indicated.
