Effect of information capturing methods concerning land use on the designated value of effective rainfall
Summary.

The fundamental problem during the construction of hydrological models of catchment type rainfall-runoff is to determine the value of effective rainfall, i.e. the one that means the surface runoff which will form the peak part of the flood wave. Of the many methods of determining effective rainfall considerable practical importance has been gained by SCS method developed by the Soil Conservation Service. This method has gained a number of followers in Poland and is successfully used in engineering hydrology. In this method, the SCS rainfall is divided into effective rainfall and losses, which are dependent on the type of soil covering the catchment area, land use in the catchment area and catchment moisture initial state. The practical application of this model poses the greatest difficulty in accurate identification of land use, which depending on the adopted source materials may be characterized by varying detail and diversity. In the present study the effect of different methods for determining land use designated on the value of effective rainfall is analysed. The analysis on the example of the Biała river basin to the cross section Mikuszowice showed that the Corine Land Cover is a much better source of information on land use to determine the value of effective rainfall than traditional analysis of the orthophotomap.
