The results of experimental investigation on hydrogen and methane production from stillage, glycerol and their mix are presented. Continuous dark fermentation was used to evaluate effectiveness of hydrogen production. The greatest rate of hydrogen production was 10.6 m3 H2/m3d obtained for glycerol fermentation with the mean hydraulic residence time (HRT) equal 3 hours. The hydrogen concentration was the highest for stillage fermentation. The efluent from dark fermentation was used as a substrate for methane fermentation with HRT = 12 days. The concentration of methane in biogas produced was 56.7-70%. The results provide a feasibility of a two-step process to utilise glycerol and stillage from biofuels plants to produce hydrogen and methane.
