The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the Akord 180 OF herbicide on the counts of soil-dwelling microbes, the activity of soil enzymes and carrot yield. The soil used in the study was loamy sand with pHKCl 6.5. Akord 180 OF was applied to soil at the following doses: dose recommended by the manufacturer and doses 10-, 50-, 100-, 150- and 200-
-times higher than that. Soil not treated with the herbicide served as a control sample. An attempt was made to alleviate the adverse effect of Akord 180 OF by the addition of bentonite in the amount 60 g·kg-1 d.m. of soil. Over the experimental period of 50 days, soil moisture content was maintained at a level equal to 60% of the capillary water capacity. The tested crop was carrot cv. ‘Kalina’ (five plants per pot). Akord 180 OF applied in overdose caused changes in the biological activity of soil. The herbicide had an inhibitory effect on the counts of bacteria of the genus Azotobacter, as well as on the activity of catalase, urease and acid phosphatase. Akord 180 OF inhibited the growth and development of carrot roots. Actinomycetes, fungi, oligotrophic bacteria and copiotrophic bacteria responded positively to the tested herbicide – their population size increased.
