The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil samples collected in the former sanitary zone of the “Legnica” Copper Smelter in years 2003 and 2005 and to estimate their impact on the development of individual groups of microorganisms. Soil samples were collected from top horizons of Phaeozems and luvisols. The test points were situated in two transects at different distances from the “Legnica” Copper Smelter. The analysed soils exhibited uniform texture and slightly more differentiated reactions and contents of organic matter. All investigated soil samples contained less than 30 µg·kg-1 total PAHs. Therefore, it can be said that they were characterised by natural concentrations of the analysed organic xenobiotics (0° – non-contaminated soils). No correlations were found between total PAHs and the determined microorganisms.
