Building of hydrotechnical constructions on free flowing rivers inevitably leads to fundamental changes in their function and structure. Natural ecosystems of the flowing waters form a continuous chain from their sources to their outlets in which the processes in the upper course have impact on the lower river. Hydrotechnical constructions interrupt this natural interactions for both floodplains and river bed. Therefore restoring biological throughput of the flowing waters is critical to maintain ecological function of the waters. Due to a big number of the different kinds of hydrotechnical constructions separating some river channels it is essential to set up priorities for the activities enabling to improve this situation and to introduce the constructions that more account for the nature. This kind of initiative can be only done through the appropriate and up-to-date inventory of the existing hydrotechnical constructions. In Poland there is still
a need to develop a consistent methodology to assess hydrotechnical constructions in order to assign the priorities for increasing river patency. The article presents a method for hydrotechnical construction mapping and inventory. Preliminary results of the channel patency assessment are presented for the Nysa Łużycka River on the section of 196+360 km – 111+630 km. Analysing current state of this section allows to indicate these hydrotechnical constructions that after their rebuilding or renewal a free migration of the river habitat would be enabled.
