The majority of present societies live in conurbations, although these areas are not favourable for rest and health of residents. Properly shaped landscape and its protection can have some influence on an improvement in life quality of city inhabitants. Except dense forests, the Maltański Reservoir belongs to those special elements shaping the character of one of the green belts in Poznań. The Maltański Reservoir is situated in the lower route of the Cybina river. The drainage area of the river has a typically agricultural character. Additionally, pollutions from point sources in the borders of city have a strong influence on cleanness of its water. The Maltański Reservoir is laid in the right-bank part of the city, it is an artificial lake formed in 1952. It is a result of damming up of the water of the Cybina river. In the 80s the reservoir was rebuilt and deepened for creating a modern regatta track. Presently the national and international canoeing and rowing competitions are organized there. The Maltański Reservoir and surroundings together with sports and recreational objects are an attractive place for inhabitants’ rest. There are: a public bathing beach, camping and gastronomy point situated by the reservoir. Unfortunately, a large load of bacteriological pollution and nutrients supplied with water of Cybina river deteriorate the water quality of the Maltański Reservoir. The localization of the reservoir in the central part of the city decides about its accessibility to all city dwellers. The objects situated near the reservoir and infrastructure create favourable conditions for the passive and active recreation within the borders of the city throughout the whole year. The aim of the presented research is to estimate the recreational value of the Maltański Reservoir and to indicate if there are any premises to change the purpose of this reservoir and explore it only to practice water sports.
