The condition of the Kraków Fortress defenses from 19th and 20th century has been rapidly deteriorating over the last decade facing the danger of destruction. Despite of being completely unadapted to tourism purposes they are popular among city dwellers and tourists. An Outline Study on the Protection Plan of the Historic Landscape Ensemble of the Kraków Fortress basing on thorough analysis of historic development and further contemporary changes makes a diagnosis of the state of fortified landscape. Consequently, respecting all possible values, it names the priority areas and actions to be undertaken in order to formulate management plan of this imposing landscape complex. There is a strong need for integrated approach towards landscape protection and rehabilitation and the re-use of the natural and cultural wealth of the former fortress. Management of the Kraków Fortress should merge its spatial, functional and meaning aspects. The Fortress should be treated as a tool for positive landscape creation and may contribute to development of new tourism opportunities for Kraków as a part of city’s sustainable development.
