Edge landscape – specific character of a border space and development of tourism
Summary.

In nature matter and energy are concentrated on the edge of patches, i.e. on the border. In other words the edge area between separate territories is more attractive for animals and plants than each area separately. Ecologists define this phenomenon as “edge effect”. In relation to the cultural landscape it is connected with composition of the boundaries of particular areas and secures the feeling of territorial separation for the users. “Edge effect” in reference to the problem of landscape borders reveals a significant touristic potential of border regions which is the result of diversification of natural and cultural landscape. Transfer of the border of the European Union to the so-called “eastern wall”, caused by political changes in last years, creates a unique chance for border tourism and it facilitates improvement of the quality of tourist space.

Key words: edge, cultural border, cultural landscape, border tourism, gate
