The shaping of landscape for recreation and ecological education on the examples in southern Scotland
Summary.

The article presents examples of the popular and well organized thematic trails of the Dumfries and Galloway Council. In this area a network was marked up and organized of diverse touristic tracks, which are linked with historical and cultural elements of the terrain as well as its natural values. In this respect the area of Langholm is worth to be pointed out. Year by year since 2000 this Scotland’s beautiful “Muckle Toon” has been offering a warm welcome to visitors by having a network of twelve marvelous walks as a splendid addition to its already rich heritage. In the center of authors interests a way marked trails to follow by bike or car, with stops to walk to interesting places were described, such as cultural and nature heritage sites: Caerlaverock Castle area, “Prehistoric Trail”, “Reivers Trail” or engineer “Thomas Telford Trail”. In the background of the article “Sculpture trails” of the River Esk and River Eden in Cumbria were described. One of them – “The poetry path” – shows a year in the life of the hill farmer and it was written on the stones.
