Susceptibility of sugar maize varieties to common smut (Ustilago zeae Beckm.)
Summary. In 2003-2006 in Experimental and Didactic Farm of Poznań University of Life Sciences at Swadzim, field trials were carried out in which the suppleness of a dozen or so varieties of a sugar maize to Ustilago zeae Beckm. strike was estimated. The tested varieties were ‘Alena’, ‘Andrea’, ‘Anava’, ‘Bandit’, ‘Basin’, ‘Bonus’, ‘Boston’, ‘Candle’, ‘Comanche’, ‘Golda’, ‘GSS 5022’, ‘Indira’, ‘KCE 602’, ‘Sheba’ and ‘Sweet Trophy’. The number of infected plants was estimated in the stage of 9 to 12 leaves. The results were expressed in percentage of infected plants and counted into Bliss angle degrees, in which form they were subjected to analysis of variance for orthogonal factor test. In the years of 2003 and 2004 there were no pathogens of common smut stated. Many infected plants were found in 2005 and 2006. The research showed differences in the suppleness of varieties to this pathogen.
