Landscape and recreation value of Lake Malta in Poznań
Summary. In Poznań, in the eastern wedge of green, at a distance of approximately 1.5 km from the Old Market there is a water reservoir of over 60 ha, created as a result of damming waters of the Cybina River. The area of the valley together with the surrounding forests, called Malta, as early as the Partitions period (1772-1918) was a favourite destination of trips and picnics by the inhabitants of Poznań. After Poland regained independence in 1918 it was planned to transform it into the National Park with a large water reservoir. This undertaking was completed after WWII:
a regatta course was constructed and the Millenium Park was established. After almost 30 years the reservoir was reconstructed. A sports and recreation complex was created, including also hotel and catering facilities. The Freedom Mound, destroyed by the Nazis, was reconstructed. An all-year ski slope was constructed. For several years now the area is the site of performances of the International Theatre Festival. The Wielkopolska Zoological Park is located at the eastern shore of the reservoir. The area, developed in this way and located close to the city centre, has a huge natural and landscape, as well as social value and its main asset is the Lake Malta reservoir.
