Are amusement parks only contemporary mechanical parks?
Summary. In the paper an attempt to analyse the current tendencies in the development of amusement parks was shown, in reference to popular entertainment complexes commonly called “mechanical parks”. The features of both types of complexes were compared. The origins of amusement parks and of complexes which had the primary influence on the contemporary form of such parks were also described. A thematic classification of the amusement parks was suggested. After the presentation of the exemplary and most innovative (in the author’s opinion) complexes, some conclusions regarding the tendencies in the development of amusement parks are presented. Based on these conclusions the attractiveness of amusement parks depends on the uniqueness and originality of their thematic offer.
