Pilgrimage tourism in the protected area based on the Lednica Landscape Park – chances and threats
Summary. Going on pilgrimages to holy places is practiced by followers of many different religions. Since the Middle Ages Christians have travelled to The Holy Land, Rome or Santiago de Compostella. At present the number of pilgrimage centres in Europe and the opportunities to reach them have increased considerably. The visited place gradually changes adequately to the intensity of the pilgrimage traffic. Socio-economic changes consisting e.g. in the economic revival of poor regions are a desirable phenomenon. Visual changes are dangerous for the landscape, especially protected landscape. In 1997 in the Lednica Landscape Park a chaplaincy centre was established attracting thousands of pilgrims. The development of the pilgrimage centre area with buildings of modern form and elements connected with religious symbols is well underway. Roads leading to the centre were widened and paved with asphalt. Regulation of roads resulted in old trees being cut down. The highly publicized place attracts new inhabitants to the recently developed residential areas as well as those individually building detached houses of modern form. In the course of the last 10 years this chaplaincy centre has been in existence, considerable changes have been imposed due to its presence in the landscape throughout the Park.
