Forest valuation is an extremely difficult task. Due to the fact that forest is a product of nature, dynamically changing in time and space, there is neither economic nor empirical nor theoretic model of it. Since there is no calculation pattern, all existing calculations of forest value are only estimates.
Changes which are taking place in the entire economy mainly concern economics, management and the financing of forest economic units. However, in accordance with the principle of sustainable development of all forest functions, services such as social and ecological are available to the public for free. There is, therefore, a need to develop a new multi-aspect approach to the issue of the value of silviculture systems and their property components such as productive and non-productive forest lands as well as stands.
The aim of this paper is to review the methods for estimating the value of forests and to indicate problems of using them in practice.
