Analysis of Żelaźnieńska sheep reproductive traits in different herd locations
Summary.

Background. Long-term breeding at least for 10 years is necessary to improve reproductive traits. Due to the fact that Żelaźnienska sheep were last tested in this category before 2005 it was necessary to assess the effectiveness of breeding work in the next decade. The study was additionally extended by a comparison of the results of reproductive traits of Żelaźnieńska sheep from two different provinces in Poland.

Materials and methods. Between 2005 and 2015 a study was conducted on Żelaźnieńska ewes maintained in two herds – one in Łódź Province at the Sheep and Goat Experimental Farm in Żelazna (n = 219) and the other in Podlaskie Province at a private sheep farm in Sokółka County (n = 264). Data from breeding books were used to compare reproduction indicators.

Results. The fertility level was similar in both herds, which means that the conditions were well adjusted to breed sheep. There were highly significant differences between the herds in traits such as: the litter size, the survival rate of seven-day-old lambs, weaned lambs and the number of lambs from one ewe per season (year). The values of these indicators were higher in the herd from the Experimental Farm in Żelazna than in the herd from Sokółka County. Also, there were high values of the reproductive traits of the Żelaźnieńska sheep kept in Sokółka County in individual years. They tended to decrease slightly, as compared with the increasing level of all reproductive traits (apart from fertility).

Conclusions. It is necessary to maintain the level of reproductive traits at the Experimental Farm in Żelazna and further improve them in the herd in Sokółka County. Probably the best solution would be to bring rams from the Experimental Farm in Żelazna to the herd in Sokółka County.
