Background. Like in other places in Poland, dozens of new houses and residential gardens are being built in Orzysz. Gardens near old houses are being transformed. The aim of this article is to analyse the current structure of gardens in Orzysz and to forecast trends of changes.
Material and methods. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 120 plots – 60 old gardens and 60 new ones. The respondents were asked about the main structures of their gardens, development, facilities, furniture and inspirations for the garden design.
Results. The results showed significant differences between the gardens established before 2000 and those established after that year. Both groups had orchards, vegetable gardens and areas between buildings which resembled country yards. The old gardens were characterised by greater species and architectural diversity. They were more colourful. The new gardens were gradually becoming more similar to gardens in big cities.
Conclusions. Despite the fact that gardens in Orzysz are becoming more and more modern, their structure differs from contemporary urban gardens shown in the media. They are a specific link between contemporary model urban gardens and rural ones.
