Background. The conservation tillage system is not common in Poland despite its positive influ-ence on the environment. Strip tillage is a new solution that reduces the risk of failure of conser-vation tillage technologies. Cover crops are important elements of conservation tillage and con-servation agriculture as they provide mulch and increase the biodiversity of the agroecosystem.
Material and methods. Between 2016 and 2018 a field experiment was conducted to determine the influence of the conventional and strip tillage systems as well as cover crops (untreated con-trol variant, phacelia, rye and oilseed radish) on the yield of pea, yield components and weed infestation. Additionally, weed infestation was checked in the untreated control variants.
Results. The yield of pea seeds was not affected by the tillage method. The best yield was ob-served when radish was used as a cover crop, whereas the lowest yield was observed in the con-trol variant without a cover crop. Strip tillage reduced weed infestation, especially the weed bio-mass in peas.
Conclusion. Peas can be planted in conservation tillage systems. The experiment did not confirm the concerns about low stands, poor yield or high weed infestation. Strip tillage combines the benefits of conventional tillage and no-tillage systems.
