Background. Many big cities do not have enough public green areas in suburbs and face the problems of intensive building development and fragmentation of historical fortifications. In Cracow, Poznań and Wrocław historical post-fortress green areas enrich urban green space while the urban environment is undergoing unfavourable changes. At present the renewal of post-
-fortress green spaces is still important. It is an attractive trend in conservation, which involves the continuation approach. The aim of the study was to identify and register changes in post-fortress green areas to protect the integrity of historical fortifications in urban green space.
Material and methods. The study was based on comparative analyses of the three cities. The areas were measured by means of the ESRI ArcGIS 10.1 software and the spatial information systems of the cities.
Results. The share of post-fortress areas with historical green space in the green space of the cities under study ranged from 1.6% to 3.3%. The comparison of the present total area of post-fortress green space with the area in the early 20th century showed no changes in Cracow, but these areas decreased by 23.5% in Poznań and by 21% in Wrocław.
Conclusions. The post-fortress areas in the cities differed in size (from 0.44 ha to as much as 22.5 ha) and adaptability. It is necessary to take active systemic measures to stop further divisions, degradation and continuing isolation of post-fortress areas.
