Background. The article presents new urban planning concepts during the interwar period and after the Second World War in a case study of Poniatowa – a small industrial town near the city of Lublin, where the organisation of social life concentrated around workplaces.
Material and methods. The article describes the evolution of spatial development of Poniatowa – its contemporary layout and forms of nature conservation. The investigation of source materials provided data for historical analysis. Cartographic investigation was chiefly based on the resources of the Town Council and Public Library in Poniatowa and the Marshal Office of Lublin Voivodeship. The study was also based on the analysis of strategic and planning documents as well as field research conducted in 2015.
Results. The analysis of the evolution of spatial development of Poniatowa showed that it was planned as an industrial town. The first stage of development consisted in creating an industrial plant and housing estates for workers. It caused a mass influx of rural inhabitants. The urban tissue was subject to continuous changes made by consecutive generations of inhabitants. This process involved using green space for urban development. The second stage of development began in 1989. The political and economic changes caused the bankruptcy of the electromechanical plant EDA S.A. In consequence, the town became an agricultural centre. Green areas began to be spontaneously used for new investments. It was an inappropriate development strategy, which negatively affected the urban landscape.
Conclusion. The research showed that the natural and cultural values of Poniatowa could be respected only through sustainable development.
