Background. Small items of sacred architecture are important elements of Polish landscape. Shrines, statues and crosses have been located in places of particular importance, especially in rural areas. They have been placed at road junctions, crossroads, in the centres and on the outskirts of villages, on baulks, edges of fields, meadows, forests and near waterbodies. They have commemorated important personal, social and historical events or they have indicated spatial divisions. For centuries they have been surrounded by vegetation, usually by trees and shrubs. The state of preservation of shrines, statues and crosses is diversified. Sometimes their appearance has changed or they have been moved to different locations. Some of them have disappeared from the surroundings. Therefore, documentation of the existing items is very important for the identity of each region.
Material and methods. The research was conducted in the commune of Nakło nad Notecią, located in the west of Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Roadside shrines and other items were located and described. Their state of preservation and forms of worship were assessed. The species composition of the surrounding dendroflora was specified.
Results. In 2015 23 items of worship were found in the commune of Nakło nad Notecią: 10 crosses, 7 statues and 6 shrines. Most of them were located on roadsides. 39 taxa, chiefly angiosperms, were identified among the surrounding dendroflora. Worship was manifested by decorations made from seasonal plants, artificial flowers, candles and festoons.
