Utracone i poszukiwane wartości krajobrazu dolin rzecznych i zieleni śródmiejskiej w Szamotułach
Summary.

Background. The scenic values of river valleys are an important element building the identity of urban structures. The article describes the results of analysis of the current state and attempts to restore and use the potential of these areas to re-establish spatial, scenic and utilitarian relations between the town and river.

Material and methods. The town has a complex system of river valleys which surround the old town centre and penetrate other parts of the town. At the first stage of the research scenic values of the river valleys were visually and descriptively assessed upon observation and inventory of the current state. Next, the area was analysed in order to restore or develop new spatial and functional relations between the urbanised structures of the town and riverside. At the third stage of the research guidelines concerning the design were proposed and concepts of spatial development of selected parts of the town were presented.

Results. The river valleys in Szamotuły were formed by the small Sama River and its numerous tributaries, which cut and divide parts of the urban structure. At present, riverside areas are covered by vegetation, whose structure and character result from the natural succession of native species. These areas are usually undeveloped and are of little utilitarian, aesthetic and scenic value. The research resulted in concepts of development of the river valleys and fragments of structures in the zone where the town meets the river.

Conclusions. The intensive development of town causes the absorption and succession of river valleys by urban functions. High utilitarian-functional and natural-scenic standards are the condition of good coexistence of the town and river. River valleys are priceless biosphere reserves for the town.
