Bankfull discharge methods in mountain streams: basic characteristics
Summary.

The article provides an overview of the most commonly used in the world and in Poland methods of determining the bankfull discharge. Bankfull value should be the main cri­terion for the selection of issues related to hydrological calculations and additionally to hydraulic calculations of river channel shape in river engineering works and designing chosen hydraulic structures, as it is in some Western European countries. The knowledge of the value of this para­meter is also important for environmentalists and hydrobiologists. Thus, the reader can find along the paper different approaches of bankfull discharge based on morphological and biotic (plant, animal) methods. The paper presents not only the theoretical descriptions of selected methods, their advantages and disadvantages, but above all practical examples of the determination of the bankfull discharge values for one of the Carpathian rivers.
