Christmas rose (Helleborus niger L.) is a perennial, which flower buds are formed in late summer or autumn and it blooms from December to April. A significant impact on the development of flower buds has cooling of plants in the autumn. Due to increasing importance of Christmas rose, especially in the accelerated cultivation for Christmas, it is advisable to investigate the effect of cooling on flowering of the latest of varieties. The aim of the study was to determine the growth and flowering of Christmas rose (Helleborus niger L.) ‘Christmas Carol’ under the influence of cooling in a polytunnel or cold storage compared to plants without cooling in the greenhouse. It has been shown that the accelerated cultivation of Christmas rose ‘Christmas Carol’ in pots can be done without cooling and with cooling, but in order to shorten the period of acceleration plants in a greenhouse for 11 days, extended flowering period and to obtain more flowering shoots, the cultivation without cooling is recommended.
