The paper presents the results of many years of research in the area belonging to the Osięciny Forest District (Włocławek Forest Inspectorate) on increasing the retention capabilities within existing water courses, while maintaining and improving the natural landscape in the area covered by the Natura 2000 programme. An analysis was performed on whether the performance and operation of small retention is justified in the riparian forest of ash-alder and sub-continental dry-ground forest. The limited control of water resources in the local forest habitats allowed for effective reconstruction of retention, especially in the summer half-years of the analysed hydrological years. In the hydrological year 2008/09, which used an adjustable drainage, the fall of water reserves was more than 3-fold lower compared with the same, hydrological year 2002/03,in terms of the amount and distribution of precipitation, in which the natural water management was conducted. In both habitats, the surface retention volume increased from 1.4 to 14.5 thous. m3, depending on the height of the dam.
